Mary started writing her first novel, a noir thriller, in sixth grade, to the consternation of her teacher and parents. All her life, she’s written poetry—some of it published, including several chap books. She was an active member of the Emerald Street Poets for several years.  In addition, Mary’s photography and articles on gardening, nature, education, travel, food, wine and art have appeared in magazines and online journals. Fruit of the Devil, available soon, is Mary’s first complete novel.

Mary taught in both elementary and secondary California public schools for nearly 30 years. She earned her B.A. in English Literature, with a minor in Social Science, from the University of California at Irvine, and a B.A. in Fine Art from the University of California at Santa Cruz. She attended graduate school at UC Santa Cruz in Education, with an emphasis in Environmental Education, and earned an M.A. in Instructional Technology from San José State University.

Mary is a native Californian. After graduating from college, she spent several years living in Pennsylvania and exploring the East Coast. She loves to learn about diverse peoples, cultures, and geographies, and has so far traveled to Europe, Africa, Asia, Latin America, Australia and Alaska. Currently, she lives in a cottage on the Central California coast with her husband—a retired NASA climate scientist—and their two dogs, cat, koi, and chickens. She spends her time practicing permaculture gardening on their urban “micro” farm, plein air painting, making pottery, bird watching, and enjoying life on the Monterey Bay, and of course—writing. She’s a member of Mystery Writers of AmericaSisters in Crime, the Silicon Valley Chapter of Romance Writers of America, the Pacific Northwest Writer’s Association, and Santa Cruz Women of Mystery, as well as Californians for Pesticide Reform, Safe Ag Safe Schools, and other environmental conservation organizations.
